Dr. Khin Thidar Aye, Chargé d’Affaires a.i./Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to the European Union, together with officials of the Embassy, participated in the discussion entitled “Cybercrime Without Borders: EU–Asia Cooperation Against Online Scams,” jointly organized by Mr. Ondřej Dostál, Member of the European Parliament, and Mr. Nasir Mohammad, Brussels City Councillor, on 13 July 2026 at the Museum of Illusions in Brussels, Belgium. The event was attended by representatives of the European Parliament, Ambassadors and diplomats from embassies and diplomatic missions based in Brussels, as well as cybersecurity and legal experts.
During the discussion, H.E. Ambassador Fei Shengchao, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of Belgium, and Dr. Khin Thidar Aye delivered keynote addresses. In her remarks, Dr. Khin Thidar Aye highlighted Myanmar’s strong commitment to combating online scam operations and emphasized that, given the transnational nature of cybercrime, effective international cooperation is indispensable. She explained the importance of coordinated efforts through the “Four Rs” approach: Reality (understanding the realities of today’s cyber landscape), Risks (identifying and assessing emerging cyber risks), Response (ensuring coordinated responses), and Resilience (strengthening the resilience of individuals, institutions, and societies).
During the roundtable discussion, the Myanmar Embassy further elaborated on Myanmar’s policies to eradicate online scam operations in border areas and prevent their spread into the country, as well as the effective enforcement of existing laws, including the Cybersecurity Law enacted on 1 January 2025, against cybercrime offenders. The Embassy also highlighted that, between October 2023 and November 2025, Myanmar repatriated more than 68,000 foreign nationals from 52 countries who had entered Myanmar illegally through neighbouring countries and dismantled numerous illegal facilities used as online scam centres in key operational areas. Furthermore, the Embassy highlighted the potential for strengthening practical cooperation between Europe and Asia in such areas as digital forensics, cybercrime investigations, financial intelligence, capacity-building, and information sharing.
