A Myanmar delegation led by Dr. Khin Thidar Aye, Ambassador of Myanmar and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Brussels, participated as an Observer in the 112th Session of the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), held at the OPCW Headquarters in The Hague, the Netherlands, from 7 to 10 July 2026.
During the meeting, OPCW States Parties discussed the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), cooperation with the OPCW, international cooperation and capacity-building programmes, measures to prevent chemical terrorism, the peaceful application of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), progress in promoting gender balance and geographical representation within the OPCW Technical Secretariat, and the Organisation’s future priorities in advancing the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
In the National Statement, the Myanmar Ambassador reaffirmed Myanmar’s strong commitment to the full implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and highlighted the country’s active participation in OPCW programmes and international cooperation initiatives. Myanmar has established the National Authority for the Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC-NA) and continues to submit its annual declarations and other required reports in accordance with the Convention. The statement highlighted the importance of strengthening the capacity of States Parties through the OPCW’s International Cooperation and Assistance Programmes. It also welcomed the OPCW’s efforts to promote the peaceful use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies, while enhancing chemical security and preventing chemical terrorism. The Ambassador further reiterated Myanmar’s commitment to working closely with OPCW States Parties and the OPCW Technical Secretariat in advancing the shared goal of a world free of chemical weapons.
