H.E. U Zaw Zaw Soe, Ambassador of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to the Kingdom of Thailand, attended the ceremony for the provision of humanitarian assistance to the families of those who were deceased in the collapse of the government audit office building under construction in the Chatuchak area of Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand, caused by the earthquake of 28 March 2025. The ceremony was held at the meeting hall of the Lawyers Council of Thailand under the Royal Patronage at 1000 hrs on 2 March 2026. The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Thanapol Kongchang, President of the Lawyers Council of Thailand. Also in attendance were responsible officials from the Ministry of Justice of Thailand, Department of Rights and Liberties Protection, Department of Special Investigation, Committee Members of the Lawyers Council of Thailand and representatives from the ITD-CREC Joint Venture (Italian-Thai Development PLC and China Railway No. 10 Engineering Group Co., Ltd.), which was responsible for the construction of the building, and family members of the deceased.
At the ceremony, the ITD-CREC Joint Venture provided financial assistance of Baht 1 million each to the family members of a total of twelve (12) Myanmar workers who were deceased as a result of the incident. This ceremony represented the fourth and final round of assistance disbursement to those verified among the deceased, and injured. Previously, during three rounds of verification, assistance had already been provided to seven (7) injured Myanmar workers and fifteen (15) deceased persons.
During the ceremony, the Ambassador expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. He noted that, upon learning that a significant number of Myanmar workers were involved in the incident, he visited the site on the morning of 29 March 2025 and met with the relevant Thai authorities. In accordance with the guidance of the national leadership, officials from the Myanmar Embassy and the Office of the Labour Attaché visited injured Myanmar workers while they were receiving medical treatment, conveyed words of encouragement, and provided financial assistance and essential supplies. The Embassy also coordinated with the relevant Thai authorities to facilitate the provision of assistance and compensation to the families of the deceased and the injured.
The Ambassador expressed appreciation to the Royal Thai Government for its responsible and accountable actions in ensuring that humanitarian assistance was provided to the affected families without discrimination and with full respect for human rights. He emphasized that, although such assistance cannot replace the loss suffered, it would provide comfort and a measure of support to the bereaved families. He further reaffirmed that, based on the longstanding friendship and cordial relations between Myanmar and Thailand, the Myanmar Embassy will continue to work in close cooperation with the relevant authorities of the Royal Thai Government.
With the agreement of the Lawyers Council of Thailand, a committee was established to provide compensation to those injured and to the families of those who lost their lives in the building collapse caused by the earthquake. Financial assistance has been disbursed in accordance with the committee’s verification and confirmation conducted by the committee. In order to ensure that Myanmar nationals received the compensation to which they were entitled, the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok and the Office of the Labour Attaché closely coordinated with the relevant committee and concerned authorities. To date, through four rounds of verification, humanitarian compensation payment has been provided for a total of thirty-four (34) Myanmar workers, comprising twenty-seven (27) deceased and seven (7) injured persons. The assistance amounted to Baht 1 million per deceased person and Baht 200,000 per injured person, bringing the total amount disbursed to Baht 28.4 million.
