U Chan Aye, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs virtually attended the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) which was held on 16 February 2022 Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The meeting was chaired by Ms. EAT Sophea, Secretary of State and, ASEAN SOM Leader of Cambodia. The Meeting was participated by the ASEAN Senior Officials and representatives from ASEAN Member. Deputy Secretary General for ASEAN Political and Security Community of the ASEAN Secretariat also participated the meeting.
The Meeting exchanged views and discussed matters pertaining to ASEAN Community Building, accession to Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, developments of ASEAN Dialogue Relations, Follow-up to the 11th ASEAN Maritime Forum and the 9th Expanded ASEAN Maritime Forum and, proposal by the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) for a Memorandum of Understanding between ASEAN and OPANAL on Joint Cooperation Measures and Strengthening the Nuclear Weapon Free Zones in Southeast Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean.
At the meeting, U Chan Aye, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed Myanmar’s continued support for Cambodia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN for 2022, including its priorities set for this year. He also informed the meeting that Myanmar will work closely with ASEAN in Community building efforts, and in promoting ASEAN's external relations.
Permanent Secretary also emphasized that the discussions on developments in Myanmar need to be in line with the principles of ASEAN Charter. He also apprised the meeting on the recent developments in Myanmar, including the positions and views of Myanmar.
