Myanmar stresses the peace process and free and fair elections are pivotal in building a federal democratic union

The Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations stated that the ongoing peace process and free and fair elections are pivotal in building a federal democratic during the introductory session of the Report of the Secretary-General on Myanmar.

The Secretary-General’s Report on Myanmar was orally introduced, through virtual format, to the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural) by the Special Envoy Ms. Christine Bugner on 23 October 2020.

During the interactive discussion on the Report, the Permanent Representative of Myanmar made a statement as the country concerned. In his statement, the Permanent Representative updated the latest achievements in the peace process, efforts of the Government and Union Election Commission to conduct the multiparty democratic general elections in a free, fair, transparent manner. Regarding the Rakhine State, Permanent Representative also updated the Meeting on the development in the implementation of Rakhine Advisory Commission Recommendations as well as the handling of accountability and implementation of the ICOE Report. Moreover, he briefed the government’s cooperation with UN agencies, ASEAN, and INGOs in addressing the Rakhine State issue and the effort in the repatriation process.

The Permanent Representative highlighted that integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity are the core values for United Nations personnel, and those are the fundamental principles that generate confidence. He also acknowledged the bridging role that Special Envoy is playing is essential in confidence-building between the UN and relevant stakeholders.

In conclusion, the Permanent Representative reaffirmed his government’s commitment to fulfill the people’s aspiration to build a democratic federal union where justice, freedom, and equal opportunity for all citizens are guaranteed and will continue to make changes towards this end.
