Vienna-based Myanmar Permanent Representative to UN apprises Myanmar’s drug enforcement activities

Ambassador U Min Thein, Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to the United Nations and other International Organizations based in Vienna, attended a briefing by the International Narcotic Control Board (INCB) on its Annual Report and Precursors Report for 2025 at the Vienna International Centre, Austria, on 2 February 2026.

The Myanmar Permanent Representative apprised the President of the INCB of Myanmar’s drug enforcement activities following her briefing on the INCB’s reports. He elaborated that, as a national priority, the Government of Myanmar has undertaken drug eradication efforts, seized narcotic drugs and precursor chemicals worth hundreds of millions of US dollars, and incinerated them on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in 2025. Many poppy plantation were destroyed. It is also implementing the Single Port Entry/Exit System to effectively prevent the diversion of precursor chemicals.

He further informed of the discovery of the largest-ever drug production sites near Mongyai Township in northern Shan State in January 2026 during recent anti-drug special operations, as well as Myanmar’s enhanced cooperation in drug enforcement at the regional and international levels. But many challenges remain.

The Permanent Representative underlined that the precursor chemicals used in producing illicit drugs are not domestic products but are smuggled into the country, emphasizing the importance of cutting these supply chains, and reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment to continued cooperation with the INCB, UNODC, and other relevant partners in combating narcotic drugs.
