Ambassador U Min Thein, Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, attended the opening ceremony of the Science and Technology Conference on the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (SnT2025), held on 9 September 2025 in hybrid format in Vienna, Austria. The conference takes place from 8 to 12 September 2025. At the ceremony, Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission and Ms. Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria delivered opening remarks. The Executive Secretary highlighted ongoing global security challenges, including armed conflicts and nuclear threats, while science and technology such as AI and ICT are advancing. He urged the remaining Annex II nuclear-weapon states to join the Treaty without delay to enable its entry into force. The CTBTO’s International Monitoring System (IMS), with 321 stations worldwide, not only verifies nuclear tests but also contributes to disaster warning systems. Technical assistance and training for National Data Centres (NDCs) were also highlighted. Remarks were also made by the former President of Ethiopia, senior officials from nuclear energy sector of France, Brazil, and Thailand, in person and Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs via video message.
