Consulate-General of Myanmar in Kunming Hosts Cultural Showcase Featuring Myanmar Traditional Dance and Marionettes (11-6-2025)

The Consulate-General of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Kunming, in collaboration with the National University of Arts and Culture under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture of Myanmar, organized a vibrant cultural exchange event showcasing traditional Myanmar dance and marionette art. The event took place at the College of Foreign Languages and South and Southeast Asian Studies, Yunnan Minzu University, in Kunming, Yunnan Province.

The event was graced by the presence of U Thwin Htet Lin, Consul General of Myanmar in Kunming, and Mr. Shao Weiqing, Pro-Rector of Yunnan Minzu University, along with professors, departmental heads, and students from Master’s, undergraduate, and diploma programs.

In his opening remarks, the Consul-General provided an overview of Myanmar’s rich cultural heritage, highlighting the historical significance and artistic value of traditional marionette theatre and classical dance. Esteemed tutors from the Department of Dramatic Arts at the National Universities of Arts and Culture in Myanmar, U Nyi Nyi Zaw and Daw Nan Cherry Aung, delivered live demonstrations of the “Nhit-par-thwa” (duet) dance and traditional Myanmar marionette performance.

Following the performances, the tutors engaged in an interactive discussion with students, exploring the cultural context, performance techniques, and preservation of Myanmar’s traditional performing arts. Participants also had the opportunity to take part in a hands-on session, learning the basic techniques of manipulating Myanmar marionettes.
