Maubin University's Main Building Opened

The opening ceremony of the newly-built Maubin University's Main Building for human resources development was held at the university in Maubin, Ayeyawaddy Division on 18 July 2003.

In his address at the ceremony, Secretary-1 said that the government is making all-out efforts to enable the nation to keep abreast with the nations of the world with dignity, strengthen the national economy and enhance the living standard of the national people. He said that Maubin University was established to enable the students of Maubin region to peacefully pursue higher education.

He said that the Maubin Technological College was opened and upgraded for the development of the region. The Maubin Hospital was also being upgraded and will soon be opened. Those facilities will contribute much in uplifting the education and health standards of the people and students of Maubin region. Furthermore, Panglong University, Panglong Technological College and Panglong Computer College have been established and Loilem District Hospital has been upgraded to a 200-bed facility in Panglong Region.

He added that previously, there were only 32 universities and colleges in Yangon, Mandalay and some big cities. But, now there have been an increase in the number of universities and colleges with up to 154 in all parts of States and Divisions. In addition to more subjects, postgraduate diplomas and Master courses, PhD courses have been opened in the growing number of universities and colleges. It is encouraging to see that arts and science universities, technological universities, universities of computer studies and institutes of medicine have produced over 200 PhD graduates.
