President U Thein Sein attends 3rd ASEAN-US Leaders' Meeting

 

NAY PYI TAW, 21 Nov-President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Thein Sein attended the 3rd ASEANUS Leaders' Meeting at Nusa Dua 3 of Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre (BNDCC) in Bali of the Republic of Indonesia at 4.40 pm on 18 November.

Also present together with President U Thein Sein at the summit were King Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen, Indonesian President Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Laotian Prime Minister Mr Thongsing T h a m m a v o n g , Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Philippine President Mr Benigno Aquino, Singaporean Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister of Thailand Ms Yingluck Shinawatra, Vietnamese Prime Minister Mr Nguyen Tan Dung, President of the United States of America Mr Barack Obama, ministers and ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Surin Pitsuwan.

First, leaders of ASEAN countries and the President of the US posed for a documentary photo. At the meeting, Heads of State/ Government of ASEAN countries and the US reviewed relations between ASEAN and the US President and discussed future prospects.

In his discussion, the US President said that he welcomed democracy transition process of Myanmar and would dispatch Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to visit Myanmar in the near future.

For his part, President U Thein Sein said that he welcomed the visit of the US Secretary of State to Myanmar and his government was striving to ease the concerns of President
Obama over Myanmar.

A joint statement was issued at the meeting. The joint statement said that they welcome political reforms to contribute towards national reconciliation and national reconsolidation of Myanmar; they encourage further improvement of protection of human rights, transparent and democratic political system and economic system; and they welcome the continuous relations of the US with Myanmar government and recent appointment of US Special Representative and Policy Coordinator for Myanmar.
